Virtual PC | Sun SolarisAlthough not a version of Linux, I'm adding it here as a variation on Unix. Many thanks to Colin B. for suggesting this. The Solaris operating system from Sun downloaded and installed without complication. It is also the only flavor of Unix I tried that detected the soundcard correctly. Note that when you set up the install will find what it thinks are two soundcards. To work, one must be disabled:
This is because Virtual PC 2004 emulates both the PCI and ISA versions of the Soundblaster 16 soundcard. This might also explain why so many versions of Linux have trouble with it! Also remember to set up your video card to the S3 Trio:
...and remember that 24-bit video is not supported:
The Solaris Desktop installed fairly easily; the big question is what do to with it!
