FAQ

Q: I'm currently using VMWare (Wkstn4) and am frustrated by the lack of ability to copy virtual machines. It seems to me I have to re-install the O/S every time I want a fresh VM. Does Virtual PC provide any way of easily "copying" a VM? - Greg

A: Yes; the virtual machine is stored as a file that can easily be copied or moved. To attach a virtual machine file to Virtual PC just click on the "new" button and follow the wizard.

Q: How much memory should I assign to a virtual machine? I have 2 GB RAM, should I assign most of it?

A: Generally try and keep the memory to the size you need. Assigning too much could prevent your virtual machine from working correctly. Generally try sizes in the range 128 mb to 512 mb (if you have 1 Gb+ RAM).

Soundcard & Linux

I got this email from Colin B., who has provided some useful suggestions:

Paul,

As a matter of fact, I do have a further observation.  Your comment that the emulation is both ISA and PCI rings a bell!  Sun Solaris 8, 9, and 10 reveal just that issue and what the problem may be.  Try loading one of those and you will get an error notice about a 'device' which will be two instances of SB16.  One will be configured with part of the parameters and the other configured with the rest.  The first instance will only have the P330.  The second will have the rest of the parameter except for P330.  MS needs to put in a requestor allowing the choice of ISA or PCI so that only one is detected.  The Linux Modprobe is not finding a single complete set of parameters either and so not recognizing a legal device.  Modprobe clearly works differently than PnP in Windows and that would be the problem.

Colin

Indeed, when installing Solaris, I got the following error about the soundcard during hardware detection:

When a reliable means of getting sound working in Linux is available, I will post it here.
